Lesson Learned
For those familiar with the Wapta Traverse, a belayed descent from this ridge under sunny skies may seem strange, if not excessive. But we’re here to learn. Our teacher and guide is Greg Franson, who steps back, having checked everyone’s handiwork. As the first in our group descends, Greg continues to encourage and educate the rest with language clear, precise and calm. Soon all five have vanished over the precipice, leaving a well-organized system of pulleys, anchors and rope in their wake.
“Having worked as an avalanche educator, I saw a real gap in what skills students were taught and what they were bringing home with them,” Greg tells me. So he modeled a series of courses based on the trainings he went through to become a guide. “Simply put,” he says, “these courses are for real skiers looking for hard skills.”
