Jackson is a Wrap: Snow and Safety at Backcountry Basecamp Stop #1

Jackson Hole didn’t only see a foot and a half of snow in the last few days. It also saw the first stop of this year’s Backcountry Basecamp tour, presented by GORE-TEX and Marmot, the three-part, nationwide roadshow that’s bringing the backcountry scene to the masses. All weekend long, guides from Jackson Hole took groups of skiers on resort and OB tours where they talked avalanche safety and touring techniques. At the Basecamp yurt village, patrollers, avalanche forecasters and the BCM editors presented on backcountry decision making, avalanche education and the latest backcountry gear. Here’s a slideshow from the event, shot by Cody Downard.

Next up, the Basecamp heads south to Crested Butte, Colo. on March 15-16. For more details, visit backcountrymagazine.com/basecamp.

  1. Jack Hogan says:

BCM threw a great event at JHMR this weekend. Demos, Tours W/Mountain Guide staff, and an impressive raffle benefiting Teton County Search and Rescue. Word is the apres ski party was pretty good also. The BCM guys (Justin & Adam?) were so friendly, they passed for locals. If the Basecamp comes to your area, consider yourself lucky and attend. I, for one, am looking forward to their return to the Tetons.

  2. How many people attended this event?
At Jackson, and the other locations.

A whole lot–several hundred, if not more, throughout each weekend. It’s free and open to the public, so skiers and riders at the resorts stream in and out all weekend long.
