Patagonia and Sweetgrass Productions Release “Jumbo Wild” Trailer

For 25 years, backcountry skiers and the First Nations tribes of Invermere, British Columbia have fought against the development of the 1,500-acre Jumbo Glacier Resort. Now, Patagonia and Sweetgrass Productions are releasing a documentary—titled Jumbo Wild—that tells the story of this ongoing fight in British Columbia’s Purcell Mountains.

The idea of the wild is when you can actually walk through a landscape without roads,” an interviewee states at the beginning of the trailer. That’s a sentiment felt by many who’ve opposed Jumbo Glacier Resort since it was first proposed in the early ’90s. Opponents contend the development would affect prime habitat for grizzly bear, an animal of great spiritual significance for Invermere’s First Nations tribes. Most recently, Backcountry reported, the Environmental Assessment Certificate held by resort planners expired in June after a lengthy period of inaction. But the debate isn’t over: Glacier Resorts Ltd. announced that it is seeking a judicial review, challenging the expiration of the certificate.

The feature film premieres in Invermere, B.C. on October 6 and will go on tour following its release. Visit patagonia.com for tour dates and learn more about the mission to protect the Jumbo Valley at keepitwild.ca.
