Cover Story: The Icons

In our 20th Anniversary Issue, we speak with editors, art directors, photo editors and contributing photographers past and present about their favorite covers from our first 100 issues. Here’s an excerpt from the conversations with former Photo Editor Cody Downard.

“I like this image because it’s completely unique from the typical photo shown on the cover of ski magazines. One look, and you can see the intensity, feel the frigid air and really get an intimate look at a true backcountry skier. This image is like no other cover I can remember, which makes it my favorite. I like something totally unexpected and uncommon, and it keeps me engaged and thinking. I really liked the design, too. I love the text wrapping the photo and the green/blue color scheme. And my favorite part is no coverlines. From a sales point of view, maybe not so good, but from a photographer’s point of view, great.” —Cody Downard, Photo Editor, 2012-2013

Great shot of an icon and a legend. Andreas and his adventures will be missed.
