Back in 1999, when this ad ran, the Iron Cross was still cool and Voilé was king of all things outernet. More than 15 years later, we still think the Iron Cross is pretty rad…when the timing is right. BCM’s Editor in Chief Adam Howard puts it thus in September’s editorial: “Why not do an Iron Cross? Even if there’s no one around. If there is, and they’ve got a camera, it’s a potential ad. Or maybe an editorial. Just not a cover.”
Even though the Cross is no longer the coolest trick in most 12 year olds’ skill set, Voilé is still killing it and the outernet couldn’t be any cooler.
We’re working toward publishing our 100th issue and celebrating 20 years of Backcountry Magazine. Can you believe it? Well, since we all can’t put our beers together with celebratory cheer, we’ve unearthed early editions of the mag, dug through them and pulled stories, photos, quotes, gear relics and more for your enjoyment. —The Editors
