“The Grand Traverse” Short Film Celebrates an Iconic Colorado Ski Race

Lines aren’t easily drawn between the iconic, contrasting ski towns of Crested Butte and Aspen. But one thread has held strong, The Grand Traverse—a point-to-point ski race that links the towns through the Elk Mountains that sit between them.

Rounding on its 25th year in 2023, The Grand Traverse has been a premier ski mountaineering event in Colorado since its inception. Today, top competitors cover the 40-mile distance, climbing more than 6,800 feet along the way, within six hours. While fast times are the goal for some, 10 frostbite-less digits and reaching the finish line are the achievements for others.

Regardless of how it ends, competitors are left with a sense of accomplishment. In this short film, “The Grand Traverse,” directed by Mike Rogge and Verb Cabin, watch as 192 racers, with Aspen in their sights, endeavor to go the distance.
