Backcountry Magazine (@backcountrymag) is the leading publication dedicated to the world of backcountry skiing and snowboarding. We are passionate about all things untracked—the adventures, community, inclusion and access, education, gear and more—and providing high-quality storytelling and valuable insights to our dedicated following of outdoor enthusiasts. As the premier source for all things backcountry, we are looking for a dynamic, creative Social Media Intern to join our team.

Job Description:

As a Social Media Intern, you will have the opportunity to dive into the exciting world of backcountry adventure while learning how to navigate the current media landscape and engage with our dedicated audience. You will work closely with our Community Manager to create engaging content, connect with our community and grow our brand’s online presence.

You will be expected to work a minimum of 15 hours/week which includes 5 hours of flex time, 10 hours within a consistent weekly schedule and a standing meeting with our Community Manager once a week.

Responsibilities:

  1. Content Scheduling: Assist in planning and scheduling social media posts to ensure a consistent and cohesive online presence.
  2. Content Creation: Collaborate with our community manager to develop compelling, engaging content for our social media platforms, including Facebook, Threads and Instagram. (If you have experience with TikTok and are interested in helping start and build our presence there, we are interested in expanding our social media presence to include this platform.)
  3. Community Engagement: Monitor feeds and respond to comments, messages and mentions on our social media channels to build and maintain strong relationships with our followers.
  4. Analytics and Reporting: Help track and analyze key social media metrics to measure the effectiveness of our campaigns and make data-driven recommendations for improvement.
  5. Trend Research: Stay up to date with social media trends and industry best practices to suggest innovative strategies for audience growth and engagement.
  6. Collaboration: Collaborate with other accounts to create unique content. Work with our editorial and design teams to ensure social media content aligns with our brand’s voice and style.

Qualifications:

  • Passion for backcountry skiing and snowboarding.
  • Strong understanding of social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Threads (and TikTok).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Creativity and the ability to think outside the box.
  • Initiative to brainstorm and implement fresh ideas and to help problem solve.
  • Experience with graphic design and familiarity with design software (e.g., Adope Lightroom & Photoshop) is a bonus. Interest in learning these skills is a must.

As the premier source for all things backcountry, we are looking for a dynamic and creative Social Media Intern to join our team.

Job Description:

As an Editorial Intern at Backcountry Magazine, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of outdoor journalism and contribute to the creation of engaging, informative storytelling. You will work closely with our editorial team to write copy, edit articles and gain valuable experience in the magazine publishing industry.

You will be expected to work a minimum of 15 hours/week which includes 5 hours of flex time, 10 hours within a consistent weekly schedule and a standing meeting with our Community Manager once a week.

Responsibilities:

  1. Editing: Assist in the editing and proofreading of editorial content to ensure accuracy, clarity and adherence to our style guidelines.
  2. Fact-Checking: Verify information and sources to maintain the highest journalistic standards.
  3. Researching for Backcountry features and departments.
  4. Reporting and writing: You will find, report on and write four articles for the Backcountry Magazine website.
  5. Newsletter Support: Assist our editors and Community Manager to build, edit and proofread our weekly newsletters.

Qualifications:

  • Strong passion for backcountry skiing and snowboarding.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with outdoor and adventure journalism is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

No specific computer proficiency is required, but interns are expected to be able to learn the basics of programs similar to Inkscape, InCopy, Photoshop and Excel. Applicants should be self-motivated and detail-oriented with good organizational skills. Since responsibilities vary wildly from day to day, the Editorial Intern must have a love of learning and an ability to multitask in a team atmosphere.
