Backcountry Magazine, located in Jeffersonville, Vt., is currently seeking an Associate Editor. Likely candidates will be deadline-oriented and creative and will possess strong writing skills and editing experience. A passion for backcountry skiing or splitboarding is a must.

Job Description:

The Associate Editor reports to and works closely with the Managing Editor and Editorial Director and will work daily within a small production team on tasks that include:

  • Writing news, profiles, editorials, gear reviews and other content for Backcountry Magazine and for BackcountryMagazine.com.
  • Planning, assigning, editing, copyediting, and proofing all content for print, digital and other projects with the editorial team.
  • Editorial planning with editors and art department staff, including developing and executing a creative and diverse editorial calendar in print and online.
  • Actively engaging and growing Backcountry Magazine’s audience online through regularly updating BackcountryMagazine.com and by managing social media outlets (Facebook and Instagram) and weekly e-newsletters.
  • Representing Backcountry Magazine at trade shows, the Backcountry Basecamp demo tour and other industry and Backcountry-specific events.
  • Assisting with development, marketing and execution of other projects related to the Backcountry Magazine brand, including the Backcountry Magazine Podcast, Backcountry Basecamp and video series.
  • Organize and facilitate the annual Backcountry Gear Test Week, along with other ongoing gear testing projects.

Qualifications/Requirements:

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field or two-plus years of journalism and/or editorial experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of backcountry skiing and/or splitboarding. Experience working within the outdoor industry is a plus. Applicants are strongly encouraged to highlight their backcountry skiing/riding experience through their application materials.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work daily within a creative team.
  • A solid blend of big-picture creativity, attention to detail, solid organizational skills and a commitment to quality.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects across platforms and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to travel regularly throughout the winter for stories, trade shows and events.
  • A strong working knowledge of WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, including inCopy and inDesign, social media management tools and Google Suite.
  • As an employee of Height of Land Publications, the Associate Editor will assist with various editorial responsibilities for company’s other titles, including for Mountain Flyer and Cross Country Skier magazines.

This is a full-time, year-round, salaried position with opportunities to work remotely. Salary commensurate with experience. While this position does not come with health care or retirement benefits at this time, travel and ski benefits and the time to pursue both are unrivaled.
