Throwback Thursday: The Premier Issue

When Backcountry first started, free-heeling, skinny skis and visors ruled. In 1994 on our first cover ever, Dan Shaefer rocked this style to its full capacity while sending mountains in the Colorado backcountry. No matter how many GoPro Xtreme YouTube videos you watch this week at work, you’ll never find something as effortlessly cool as the good looks and badass hop turns the ’90s brought us.

Issue 1, Oct/Nov 1994

We’re working toward publishing our 100th issue and celebrating 20 years of Backcountry Magazine. Can you believe it? Well, since we all can’t put our beers together with celebratory cheer, we’ve unearthed early editions of the mag, dug through them and pulled stories, photos, quotes, gear relics and more for your enjoyment. —The Editors
