It’s often a good sign when you wake to the sounds of avalanche blasting. That’s how Day One at the Solitude Mountain Resort stop of the GORE-TEX Backcountry Basecamp began. Some eight inches of snow fell the night before, but in the backcountry, where John from Utah Mountain Adventures led free backcountry tours, the light-density fluff felt much deeper. Skiers and riders streamed in and out of the Basecamp all day before an evening avalanche-dog demonstration and an après raffle that raised $4,000 for Wasatch Backcountry Rescue. Here’s a gallery from the day.

Big kuddos and thank you to the backcountry mag for the organization of this event! The reps from different brands were really helpful and cool dudes, and the different activities throughout the day were spot on!
And i wanna shout a huge thanks to john who took us on the tour in the afternoon! Great powder and faceshot aplenty!!!
Hi fives to y’all!
The guy in red and yellow on the group pict!!!
Yurt looks great!
Bruce and John were great!!! Thanks to all for what I’m sure was a huge and exhausting effort. What a great learning opportunity. And John, even though I didn’t express my appreciation at the time, thanks for your honest critique of my pack. Believe it or not, I Contacted the manufacturer and related the points you made and they admitted that last years model was not well designed for the average shovel. And, they are coming me a new, improved version from this years line! I owe you guys one. Backcountry staff all very cool and kind. Tyler, amazing turns and great photo skills too.
“Comp-ing”, not coming. Haha.
