Swedish freeskier Matilda Rapaport dies in Chilean avalanche

FARELLONES, CHILE. On Thursday, July 14, 30-year-old Swedish freeskier Matilda Rapaport was injured in an avalanche while filming. Rapaport was buried for an estimated time of 30 minutes, and the lengthy burial induced a coma that eventually resulted in death, reports Ski Racing.

Rapaport was in Chile at the time of the accident with her husband, World Cup alpine skier Mattias Hargin. The couple had been married only three months.

A Red Bull athlete, Rapaport is known for her ski segments in the 2013 all-female film, “Shades of Winter” and the film “Pure”—both produced by Red Bull TV. Her competition titles include placing first in the 2011 Scandinavian Freeskiing Championships and winning the finals stage of the Freeride World Tour in 2013, reports Redbull.com.

Tommy Eliassen Winter, director of the Swedish Ski Association told Ski Racing, “It’s a terrible event with an unfortunate outcome that is very difficult to take in.”

Makes one wonder what is the responsibility of the film- making indutry in this kind of tragedies. Too (disproportionately ???) many fatalities occur in filming sessions.
