Backcountry Magazine Welcomes Greta Close as Associate Editor

Backcountry Magazine is excited to welcome Greta Close to its production team as associate editor. An intern this summer, she returns—following a month lobstering in Maine—in a new role, joining Editor-in-Chief Betsy Manero and Managing Editor Tom Hallberg.

A native of Norwich, Vermont, Close caught the ski bug after walking away from her college hockey career at the University of Vermont (UVM). She hasn’t looked back since. Following her first ski season at Vermont’s Sugarbush Resort—cut short by the onset of Covid—Close took a year off from school to live out her ski bum dreams in Jackson, Wyoming. Living in the Tetons fast-tracked her introduction to the ski world—and the backcountry.

That winter in Jackson led to a spring in Utah and a summer in Alaska. In each place, Close was just as captivated by the natural environment as she was by people she met and the stories they shared.

When she returned to UVM last fall to complete her degrees in global studies and religion, she joined the school’s Community News Service. Eager to tell stories from a mountain town closer to home, she chose to intern for Waitsfield’s newspaper, The Valley Reporter.

“As a rapidly immersed newcomer to the outdoor industry and recent college graduate, Close adds a young, fresh perspective to Backcountry Magazine’s crusty, millennial editorial team,” Manero says. “She brings an enthusiasm to expand our magazine’s presence on social media and offers insight into making it more accessible to those who are less well-versed in the untracked experience.”

Though she didn’t expect to so fully embrace the ski-bum lifestyle, Close is looking forward to immersing herself in the backcountry community.

“With winter around the corner,” she says, “I’m excited for another season meeting people in the mountains.”
