Black Crows Camox Freebird Skis

“Best for someone who wants a monogamous relationship with their skis,” one tester quipped of the Black Crows Camox Freebird’s loyalty-inspiring performance that’s now secured this 96 mm-underfoot ski an Editors’ Choice Award two years running.

“Best for big days when you know you’re going to be going through variable terrain,” one tester said.

Slight tweaks to last year’s model return and include titanal reinforcement underfoot and reduced ABS sidewalls—meaning the lively-yet-sturdy ride hasn’t lost its ability to transfer energy from boot to ski. A paulownia core (updated from pre-2019 iterations sporting a paulownia/poplar blend) is mixed with fiberglass and carbon to contribute to weight savings; all combined, the Camox Freebird stands 600 grams lighter per pair than its predecessor.

“As a lightweight dude, this is the perfect ski for boot-top pow or corn,” one tester said. Another kept his reaction succinct: “Light and nimble, yet damp and playful.”

Weight shaved doesn’t mean the Camox only thrives through easy-going conditions; its ability to cut through crud while maintaining float unanimously impressed testers. “Best for big days when you know you’re going to be going through variable terrain,” one tester said. “Confidence inspiring when the going gets weird,” noted another, who picked up on the Camox’s healthy amount of tip rocker and slight tail rocker. “[Black Crows] nailed the rocker mix on these boards—they plain in soft snow quickly, turn on a dime and aren’t timid in mixed snow,” she continued.

And while one tester found the tails less inviting—“This ski would be perfect if it wasn’t for the grabby tails”—the Camox knows its place: everywhere.
