Throwback Thursday: Asolo Tele Breeze Plus

Like the ad says of Asolo’s revolutionary Tele Breeze Plus, “sometimes words are not necessary….” We’re working toward publishing our 100th issue and celebrating 20 years of Backcountry Magazine. Can you believe it? Well, since we all can’t put our beers together with celebratory cheer, we’ve unearthed early editions of the mag, dug through them […]

Throwback Thursday: The “Equipment” Really Counts

Throwback to Issue #10, January 1997, when topsheets were neon, freeheel bindings were dainty and telemark skiers didn’t wear clothing. Because it’s “the equipment” that really counts….   We’re working toward publishing our 100th issue and celebrating 20 years of Backcountry Magazine. Can you believe it? Well, since we all can’t put our beers together […]

Video: Spring in Tuckerman Ravine

Episode Six of the Meathead’s “Working for the Weekend” heads to Mt. Washington’s mega-classic spring ski, Tuckerman Ravine. “It’s really not about skiing,” Ben Leoni says, “It’s about celebrating the ski season…it’s a party, it’s a circus.” And the springtime-circus is filled with sunburns, silly outfits, big hucks and scary carnage, all showcased in the […]

That Girl: Carolyn Stwertka

Carolyn Stwertka is a nerd. Tried & New: Black Diamond Razor Carbon Pole

As a ski magazine editor, I’m fortunate enough to upgrade my quiver, boots, apparel and accessories almost annually. But one constant in my gear over the last several years has been these Black Diamond poles. In fact, beyond some foot beds, a few pairs of underwear and one particular flask, my poles might be the […]

Spaceman: Greg Hill’s March Odyssey

“I hiked to outer space and skied back down in a month,” Greg Hill said over the phone as he boarded a Revelstoke gondola last week. “That’s pretty rad.” Hill, who is known for vertical challenges like climbing and skiing 2-million feet in a season (2010) or 50,000 feet in a day, set out to […]

The Third Reverse: The 17th Annual GORE-TEX Grand Traverse

This weekend marked the 17th skiing of the GORE-TEX Grand Traverse, which typically stretches 40 miles from Crested Butte, Colo. to Aspen. But this year, the race was rerouted due to avalanche danger and run as a reverse from Crested Butte to the Friend’s Hut and back. Still, some 200, two-person teams toed the line in Crested Butte to compete in the third running of the Grand Reverse.

Soultrain Skimo: Kicking Off The Grand Traverse

“This is the best night of the year,” second-time Grand Traverse racer Adam Ferrow yells. The bus from downtown Crested Butte, Colo. to the resort is equally packed with afroed and bedazzled Soul Train partygoers and softshell-clad, skinny-ski toting Elk Mountain Grand Traverse racers. And while this year’s race course, which typically runs 40 miles from Crested Butte to Aspen, has been altered due high avalanche danger, the energy in Crested Butte is electric.
