Wild Rides: Inside the 2022 Gear Guide

This year, we did things a little differently. In lieu of bringing 60 testers, techs and cooks to our week-long test at Powder Mountain, Utah, we held local mini tests across the country all season long. The results are 153 reviews of skis, splitboards, boots, bindings and apparel, including 35 Editors’ Choice Award winners. These are deep and detailed reviews of products we tested hard, with real and credible feedback from testers in their home ranges, East to West.

Get your copy of the 2022 Backcountry Gear Guide with in-depth reviews of all 35 Editors’ Choice winners, plus additional reviews of 153 skis, splitboards, boots, bindings, apparel and accessories.

  1. Really disappointed in the gear guide this year. Tons of 2,000g+ “Touring” skis and no side-by-side comparisons/charts like last year. Really just a bunch of ski ads.

    • Agreed. Too many comments about these backcountry skis groomer performance.
Stop listing off marketing buzzwords about fancy new sidewall construction and core layup and just tell me how they ski.

Agree, this year’s felt like an Outside magazine gear issue/reviews, basically afraid to potentially upset an advertiser and leaving the readers wanting actual quality content.
