Jackson Hole Basecamp: Day 2 Dispatch

The sound of avalanche control bombs rang in the break of day on Sunday at Backcountry Basecamp. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort reported five new inches of snow overnight and crowds were lined up for tram laps early in the morning. With fully booked guided tours and another day of demos during day two of Basecamp, skiers and riders were able to explore sidecountry terrain and learn about avalanche safety from Jackson Hole Mountain Guides and AIARE certified instructors.

New snow means new talking points about safety in the backcountry, and AIARE instructor, Nancy Bockino, was there to give pointers on safe travel.

The day wrapped up with more snowfall, a good omen for the next Basecamp stop at Smugglers’ Notch Resort in Cambridge, Vermont. Find out about the Backcountry Basecamp tour locations at backcountrymagazine.com/backcountry-basecamp-2016.

Backcountry’s traveling Basecamp weekend had it’s message driven home by tragedy. http://www.tetongravity.com/story/news/2-skiers-dead-after-triggering-avalanche-in-jackson-hole-sidecountry
I happened to be on the Basecamp sidecountry tour Sunday morning and stopped with our guide at the spot where these skiers decided whether or not to proceed into the terrain where the avalanche occurred. Our JH Backcountry Guide, Jeff Zell, stopped there to make the point, that even if there are tracks leading into terrain you are unfamiliar with, that is no guarantee it is safe. We were also briefed on the importance of proper equipment and the knowledge of how to use it.
Backcountry’s Basecamp does a great job of exposing skiers and snowboarders, with an interest in backcountry recreation, to the equipment and education necessary to have a safer experience in the backcountry. The Basecamp Tour is helping to stress the need for intelligent use of the backcoutry, so as not to needlessly expose ourselves, or others in the community, to avoidable risks.
I hope Basecamp Tour continues to stop @Jack Hole Mountain Resort, and continues to promote backcountry education for all. It can save lives.
My sympathies are with the friends and families of the victims
    Jack
