Salomon QST 106 Skis

Salomon’s five-ski QST series has become ubiquitous at resorts and in the backcountry since its 2016 introduction. And while each ski has experienced minor improvements over the last three years, the entire line is overhauled this season to improve versatility and turn initiation. Those updates shone best in the QST 106.

“These feel much bigger than their size, thanks to first-rate dampening and a finely tuned rocker/taper/width combo.”

While the ingredients in the QST remain largely unchanged (a snappy poplar core with layers of basalt for dampening and a carbon/flax weave to enhance rigidity while keeping weight in mind), the ratios in the recipe are new for 2020: this year’s 106 gets an extra layer of carbon for stiffness, and cork now plumbs the tip and tail, replacing the previous honeycomb-like structure for a material that, while heavier, offers heightened vibration dampening. The QST’s profile is overhauled, too, with taller tip and tail rocker and more width up front, which increases the ski’s turning radius and is aimed to enhance the flotation of what’s already a notably buoyant ski.

“These feel much bigger than their size, thanks to first-rate dampening and a finely tuned rocker/taper/width combo,” noted one tester familiar with last year’s model. “As approachable as a $5.99 all-you-can-eat buffet,” he added. Several others took note of the improved vibration control and confidence in cut-up conditions. “Best for variable snow where dampening is more important than heft,” another said. But one found that smooth feel comes at a price: “Felt heavy on your feet.” Even so, said another, “still plenty light for day in/day out touring.”
