It’s Snow and Avalanche Workshop Season

The mercury dipped below freezing this weekend in Teton Valley, Idaho, home of Backcountry Magazine’s remote, Western office, which makes us think of winter. Though we’re still a couple months away from actually being on snow, it is finally the time of year when your friends won’t look at you sideways when you start talking about which new gear to buy or avalanche classes to take.

It’s still too early for on-snow instruction, but panel discussions like this one at the 2021 Wyoming Snow and Avalanche Workshop are a way to kickstart your learning for the winter. [Photo] Courtesy Teton County Search and Rescue

That time of year coincides with snow and avalanche workshop season, when avalanche centers and educational organizations around the country bring in snow-science experts to share the latest insights. To help you find one in your region, we’ve compiled a list of the workshops we know about, but if we’ve missed one, please email and we’ll add it.
