Old Farmer’s Almanac makes unbelievable predictions: A reliable outlook or wishful thinking?
“Winter will be cold again,” the 2016 Old Farmer’s Almanac, released Monday, boldly claims. This beloved book of astronomy and agriculture forecasts “below-normal temperatures along most of the Atlantic seaboard and in the Ohio Valley, Great Lakes, Pacific Northwest, and southwestern states” in the months to come. If this is true, it’s a welcome foretelling for skiers, but many scientists warn that the Almanac’s forecast must be taken with reservations.
Montana Meanderings: Beau Fredlund has Summer Skiing Dialed
Beau Fredlund is a guide and freelance photographer based out of Cooke City, Montana. And he’s a committed year-round skier who has skied all over the globe, in places like Alaska, Kyrgyzstan and Norway—just to name a few. But Beau remains loyal to summer skiing in Montana, where he’s confident he’ll find skiable terrain, be it winter or summer. “There’s a lot to ski around this area so I find plenty to keep me moving,” says Beau, who continues skiing in the Beartooths well into the summer months, whether he’s guiding clients or on his own exploratory missions.
We caught up with Beau a few weeks back to discuss summer skiing, conditions in the Beartooths and an upcoming fly-fishing/ski linkup.

New Zealand Avalanche Claims Life of Australian Businessman
QUEENSTOWN, NEW ZEALAND The avalanche death toll is rising in New Zealand’s 2015 winter season. On Monday, an avalanche claimed the life of 58-year-old Roger Greville at 2:38 p.m. Greville, an Australian national and businessman from Sydney, was on a guided heli-ski trip with Southern Lakes Heliski in the Hector Mountains of the Loch Linnhe region when the accident occurred.
